Our Story
Why Families Choose CREST
Choosing the right educational path is a critical decision for families of students with unique abilities. At Crest School, we provide a specialized, comprehensive ecosystem that standard campuses simply cannot replicate. We meet students exactly where they are, offering individualized attention, therapeutic support, and highly specialized pathways tailored to unique learning needs. Our campus culture is built entirely on the belief that every student can achieve independence and meaningful community connection. By blending dedicated academic instruction with robust, real-world life and vocational skills, Crest provides a clear, empowering pathway toward a brighter, more autonomous future.
What Our School Offers: Our Three Pillars
Our school is thoughtfully organized into three distinct, specialized departments designed to support our students from early childhood through post-secondary transition:
The ACCESS Department (IND)
Exclusively serving our Intellectually Disabled (IND) population across all grade levels, our ACCESS department focuses on foundational life skills, functional academics, and communication tools. We utilize specialized instruction to ensure that every student can access the world around them with confidence and autonomy. Ensuring our students have the communication skills they need to succeed in life stands at the forefront of this department. Environmental Communication Training (ECT) is embedded in all student activities from academics to self-advocacy.
The RISE Department (EBD)
Serving our Emotional Behavior Disability (EBD) population across all grade levels, RISE stands for Resiliency, Integrity, Supportive, and Empowered. This department blends academic growth with therapeutic, trauma-informed behavioral interventions, helping students master self-regulation, resilience, and overcoming adversity.
The Transition Academy
Designed for post-secondary graduates who have deferred their diplomas, our Transition Academy equips young adults with authentic, hands-on vocational experiences. Our programs build real-world independence through heavily integrated community partnerships.

As the proud principal of this remarkable school community, I am honored to welcome you to a campus where every student’s potential is recognized, celebrated, and deeply nurtured, and every student’s ability is unlocked, and empowered. Citrus Resource for Exceptional Students in Transition, or CREST, is a unique, dedicated special day school designed exclusively for Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students with disabilities. Our mission goes far beyond traditional schooling; we provide a highly structured, supportive, and compassionate environment where students across all grade levels and post-secondary adults can truly thrive. Here, we don’t just teach; we champion the individual strengths of every learner, building a foundation of independence, dignity, and lifelong success.

Points of Pride: Inside the Transition Academy
Our curriculum translates directly into measurable student success and community integration. As detailed in our programming flyers, our student-led initiatives include:
Culinary Arts & Hospitality Excellence: Students operate an in-house coffee shop including coffee cart operations, recipe following, and money management, learn commercial food preparation, follow strict nutrition guidelines in partnership with the University of Florida, and have the opportunity to earn professional ServSafe Certifications.
Comprehensive Campus & Community Stewardship: Students master vital independent living skills, including custodial tasks, professional laundry operations (partnering with local entities like The Plantation of Crystal River), and maintaining the grounds of the Lecanto School Complex.
Automotive Shop & Mechanics Program: Through hands-on automotive detailing and community-based instruction trips to local mechanic shops, students learn vehicle maintenance and fleet care, including a specialized airport lab experience at the Crystal River Regional Airport.
Creative Arts & Vocational Labs: Students explore their talents and build fine motor skills through our ArtSea Alcove ceramic work, photography adventures, digital media design, embroidery/engraving, laminating skills, and confidential document shredding workshops.
Hands-On Animal Care & Environmental Science: In partnership with regional landmarks—including the Adopt a Cow Program, Boyett's Grove, Mertailor Aquarium, Wildlife Park, and Ziggy's Parrot Haven—students gain invaluable real-world experience in daily animal feeding routines, habitat maintenance, and environmental stewardship.
Micro-Credentialing Success: Across all vocational tracks, Crest students actively earn specialized skill badges in core competencies including Employability, Safety, Job Attainment, and Self-Advocacy, proving they are ready for the modern workforce.
